Our Trip - Day Deux

Day 2 of our trip opened cold and drizzly. We were glad for the cooler temperature but not so much for the rain. We dressed for the trails, hoping we could walk them later. We looked for, and found a local family restaurant to have our breakfast.

The food was basic and good. I had 2 eggs over easy with bacon and rye toast. Dennis had the French Toast. The coffee was "rot-gut" and a bit disappointing, but hot. A single waitress served the entire place, which seemed like home to a number of "locals." The most interesting thing about the place was how they displayed their menu. I didn't feel I could take photos because of the number of patrons present. Above the large pass-through into the kitchen were individual signs spelling out the menu items. They looked like black and white street signs! The prices beside them, were made from individual numbers like you would put on a mail box or on your home. The daily menu "specials" were made by computer on plain white printer paper and slid into page protector sleeves and taped to each other in a ladder configuration below the regular menu items. They hung down into the pass-through window. I wish I could have taken a photo. It was like nothing I'd ever seen before.

So, off we went into the drizzle. We visited an import store, and then some antique stores. artisan-mall logan-antiques I picked up a couple of retro items for my growing collection and also a vintage Mad Magazine for $1.00 which contained a parody of the early Batman movies starring Michael Keaton.

This church was just a block off the main street of Logan and was so beautiful, we took photos. Hocking Hills 1008 (6) Hocking Hills 1008 (7)

We had several travel guides of the area, including restaurants. We saw a place called "Etta's Lunchbox Cafe" which was located near Old Man's Cave, which was one of our planned destinations. We drove quite a way South and East to find Etta's. It was worth every drop of gasoline we used to get there! It was probably the tackiest place I've ever seen. It was run-down, and ill kept. The proprietor talked 100 mph and never stopped except to wait on people just coming in or to run the cash register. He never forgot what he was telling us though, and could continue what he was saying without even a second thought. We found out he was educated at Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio and then spent 25 years as a chef in downtown Columbus, Ohio. The then "chucked it all", took a risk, and open Etta's. Etta's has been featured on The Today Show. If you have 5 minutes, watch this video! Here are our photos: Hocking Hills 1008 (14) Hocking Hills 1008 (11) Hocking Hills 1008 (13) Hocking Hills 1008 (12) Yes. That is a goat on the cafe porch, and a donkey and llamas beside the cafe. They all had names as well. When we went over to see the donkey and llamas, the donkey began to bay and laugh and all the llamas hurried into one corner. When they were safely in their corner, the donkey came over to check us out. His ears turned like radar and were about 12" long. Weird stuff, that. Oh, we also ate at Etta's and the food was very good.

We left the over 900 lunch boxes and 5 llamas, 3 goats, 1 strangely intelligent donkey, various cats, dogs, ducks, and chickens behind us and followed signs to "Lois' Antique Shop." Lois was such a pleasant woman, it was really more fun to talk to her than to look at her antiques! We left Lois' with purchased, made by Lois herself, Apple Butter and Blackberry Jam! She also gave us some fresh apples.

We drove the short way to Old Man's Cave and then Conkle's Hollow. The weather had turned fine and dry and we were able to follow the trails. Here are a couple of our photos:

We drove back up to Logan, and found a BBQ place to eat. millstone-bbq We weren't dressed for anything very fancy, and figured a BBQ place would fit the bill. It was a very popular place near the highway and we had to wait a bit. The food was slightly disappointing, especially after the fab meal we'd had the night before. We had half and chicken and brisket. The best part were the mini-corn muffins which were so sweet, we ate them for dessert.

This is the end of day 2.
