Our sump pump managed to lull us into a state of trust and whilst we slept Wednesday morning, within a 3 hour period, the pump stopped and we accumulated 2” of water throughout our basement. Our FINISHED basement. It resembled a Troll Cave more than ever. Thankfully, Dennis had the day off and got all the carpet pulled out. Before removing the carpet, Dennis spent hours with the carpet cleaning machine sucking water out of the carpet. Nathan and Rachel made a surprise visit and Nathan helped with the carpet removal. Thanks Nathan! Here’s the photographic evidence:
Of course, the house smelled like a damp basement and became very humid. Fans were placed downstairs and the dehumidifier has been running constantly. Thursday, I spent 5 or 6 hours scraping and sweeping up the remains of the foam padding from the carpet. It’s nearly done. Here’s what it looks like so far:
You can see Fred in the photo. He seemed to think it was real fun watching us work. There are dusty paw prints on the pool table now. Hmmm…
The coolest bit is, we now have probably the only carpeted parking tarmac in Ohio and possibly in the United States. See?:
It is really weird driving across carpet to get in and out of the garage. We will be pulling it up Saturday to stow in the workshop until we can haul it to the Landfill.
It could have been so much worse. We are counting our blessings.

I hope there are no broken backs from carrying that water-logged carpet upstairs! Looks great though- you got it cleaned up nicely!
What a mess, nice driveway though! When we got our basement carpet they suggested no padding...it's been lifesaver as the end of the basement near sump pump was flooded several times. But we just get a carpet cleaner and suck out the dirty water and then wash the carpet and run the fans, and you really can't tell anything happened.
oh no!! glad it wasn't worse though... one nice thing about living in the city is that we have bulk pick up once a month - we can leave giant rolls of carpet in the alley and they magically dissapear :-)
