The first step in making the backs for my chairs was to make prototypes out of cardboard.
The back shat design was then transferred to the blanks. I made a bow from a piece of scrap to insure fair curves on tops and bottoms.
The backs were then cut out on the band saw and the ends carefully sized to fit properly into the mortises in in the chair’s back posts.
With all the parts ready, the back slats were heated in boiling water and bent to a (hopefully) comfortable rounded shape and popped into place. This is easier said than done as the 1/4 inch thick slats were not all that willing to work with me.
Next will be finish and then weaving the seats – stay tuned…
